Going on a boat trip in China is a unique perspective on the country’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. A boat trip on the Li River, with its iconic karst mountains and serene waters, immerses you in one of the most picturesque sceneries in the world. Boat trip on the Li River

If you are visiting Guilin, you must go on this iconic experience on Li River. The journey offers breathtaking views of the limestones peaks from Guilin to Yangshuo and the view over the charming rural villages. There is two options on Li River: boat cruise or bamboo raft. Both experiences are for lifetime, but I prefer boat trip. Whether you choose a standard cruise or an intimate bamboo raft, the experience promises unforgettable sights and a deeper appreciation of the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

Best Time to Go

• Spring (March to May):
• Weather: Mild and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).
• Highlights: The landscape is lush and green, and the river is full from spring rains, enhancing the scenic beauty.
• Autumn (September to November):
• Weather: Cool and dry, with temperatures between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).
• Highlights: Clear skies and pleasant temperatures make for perfect cruising conditions, with vibrant autumn foliage adding to the beauty.
• Summer (June to August):
• Weather: Hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F), and frequent rains.
• Considerations: Despite the heat and occasional rain, summer is still a popular time due to school holidays and vibrant river activities.
• Winter (December to February):
• Weather: Cooler and drier, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F).
• Considerations: Fewer tourists and lower water levels can offer a more peaceful experience, though the landscape may be less lush.

Cruise Options

• Standard Cruises: Typically last 4 to 5 hours, departing from Guilin and ending in Yangshuo. These cruises offer comfortable seating, lunch onboard, and narrated commentary about the sights.
• Luxury Cruises: Provide upgraded amenities, including gourmet meals and more spacious seating options.
• Bamboo Rafting: A more intimate and traditional experience, ideal for shorter trips on calmer sections of the river.

Sights and Highlights

• Nine Horses Fresco Hill: A cliff face featuring natural rock formations that resemble horses. Legend has it that if you can spot all nine horses, you’ll be blessed with good luck.
• Xingping Town: Known for its picturesque scenery, Xingping is one of the most photographed spots along the river. The famous 20-Yuan note view can be found here.
• Yellow Cloth Shoal: A shallow, clear section of the river with a large, smooth yellow rock that reflects beautifully in the water.
• Fishing Villages: Observe local fishermen using traditional cormorant fishing techniques, where birds dive to catch fish for their masters.

A Yangtze River cruise is a must-do experience for anyone visiting China. The Yangtze River the longest in Asia and the third-longest in the world, stretches over 6,300 kilometers (3,917 miles) from the glaciers of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to the East China Sea near Shanghai. Cruises usually cover the most scenic and historically significant part of the river, passing through the Three Gorges region between Chongqing and Yichang. This boat trip journey offers travelers beautiful natural scenery, cultural experiences, and insights into China’s rich history.
